Under the scarlet sails

This book is about Fedor’s fourth circumnavigation. Sailing solo around the world is already a remarkable achievement, but add to it an 85 foot maxi-yacht and it becomes an undeniably bold and unprecedented challenge against nature and human abilities. This book is about Fedor’s fourth circumnavigation. Sailing solo around the world is already a remarkable achievement, but add to it an 85 foot maxi-yacht and it becomes an undeniably bold and unprecedented challenge against nature and human abilities. The idea of sailing alone on a maxi-yacht, which requires a team of at least 15 people, occurred to Fedor after racing in a few different regattas where he worked alongside teammates. In 1997, together with his support team Fedor began to plan such an undertaking, and in 2003 they were able to find a sponsor who against all odds believed in the project. The major Russian trading network “Alye Parusa” bought an 85-foot long yacht and funded the preparations, innovations, numerous adjustments and modifications in order to make it possible for one man to sail the enormous vessel alone around the world. Finally in November 2004, the maxi yacht “Alye Parusa” left Falmouth, England heading towards the Cape of Good Hope. Fedor was to become not only the first Russian to sail solo a maxi-yacht around the world, but the first one in the sailing world to undertake such a feat. What followed for the next 189 days and 33,000 nautical miles is documented in great detail in the personal journals of the explorer. The book is full of graphic descriptions of what storms look like in the South Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. The pages reflect not only Fedor’s fascination with the Ocean but his deepest fears and loneliness that only through hard work and constant prayer he was able to overcome. Beneath the Scarlet Sails is a unique self-study of what happens to a person when at his own will he’s thrown into the most fierce and unforgiving conditions on the planet. The title of the book is a tribute to the expeditions’ main sponsor “Alye Parusa” which means scarlet sails in Russian.
