In the winter of 2000 Fedor and his wife Irina flew to Alaska where Fedor would train and then participate in the Iditarod. The book gives a detailed account of what goes into preparing for the world’s foremost dogsled race. Together, Fedor and Irina paint a picture of not only idyllic and majestic surroundings of Alaska, but also a very human portrait of the people whose livelihoods depend on this race. The main theme of the book however, is the life of a race dog. Both Irina and Fedor were completely smitten by the dogs’ personality and unconditional love that treating them as mere racing dogs became out of the question. The first part of the book gives a picture of each and every dog that Fedor chose for the race. The second part of the book is written in the form of a daily journal where the authors reflect on the beauty and hazards of the Iditarod race track; the hospitality of each city from Anchorage to Nome; and the enormous physical and emotional demands not only on a musher but on the dogs as well. The Road without Ground also contains a complete and unabridged personal journal from Fedor’s racing in the French sailing race around the world “Vendee Globe 2000”.
