«On the Edge of possibility» — is a travel diary in which Fedor Konyukhov describes his solo voyage around Antarctica in 2008 (Antarctica Cup 2008), along with with photographs of his sketches.
In his notes Konyukhov writes about the things that helped him deal with loneliness, fear, and powerlessness and survive while journeying to the key point in his travels – Cape Horn. Anchoring the smallest change in the outside world to his internal state, the author produces an account of his long journey that has a harsh and fascinating atmosphere.
“As I move further South, with every day and every mile the ocean grows colder. The yacht’s frost-bound rigging, guys, stays and crosspieces all appear bleached, sparkling in the grey fog. The hoarfrost makes the mainsail hang like a tapestry in the Temple of Jerusalem.”
Every one of Konyukhov’s journeys is a test of fortitude and willpower. This one is no exception. In reaching his goal, he spent several days in a powerful storm – half a step away from a tragic end. He managed to exceed himself, setting a world record in solo voyaging.

This book is about Fedor’s fourth circumnavigation. Sailing solo around the world is already a remarkable achievement, but add to it an 85 foot maxi-yacht and it becomes an undeniably bold and unprecedented challenge against nature and human abilities. The idea of sailing alone on a maxi-yacht, which requires a team of at least 15 people, occurred to Fedor after racing in a few different regattas where he worked alongside teammates. In 1997, together with his support team Fedor began to plan such an undertaking, and in 2003 they were able to find a sponsor who against all odds believed in the project. The major Russian trading network “Alye Parusa” bought an 85-foot long yacht and funded the preparations, innovations, numerous adjustments and modifications in order to make it possible for one man to sail the enormous vessel alone around the world. Finally in November 2004, the maxi yacht “Alye Parusa” left Falmouth, England heading towards the Cape of Good Hope. Fedor was to become not only the first Russian to sail solo a maxi-yacht around the world, but the first one in the sailing world to undertake such a feat. What followed for the next 189 days and 33,000 nautical miles is documented in great detail in the personal journals of the explorer. The book is full of graphic descriptions of what storms look like in the South Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. The pages reflect not only Fedor’s fascination with the Ocean but his deepest fears and loneliness that only through hard work and constant prayer he was able to overcome. Beneath the Scarlet Sails is a unique self-study of what happens to a person when at his own will he’s thrown into the most fierce and unforgiving conditions on the planet.
The title of the book is a tribute to the expeditions’ main sponsor “Alye Parusa” which means scarlet sails in Russian.

This book contains Fedor Konyukhov’s diaries that he wrote before and during the inaugural Antarctica Cup Ocean Race (ACOR) 2008. The ACOR is a non-stop race around Antarctica on the Antarctica Cup Racetrack, starting and finishing in Albany. On his boat Trading Network Alye Parusa, an 86 foot long aluminum high performance racing yacht, Fedor sailed 16,356 nautical miles around Antarctica taking 102 days, 1hour, 35 minutes and 50 seconds. The diaries reflect the philosophical purpose as to why Fedor strives to put himself in the harshest environments around the globe. This book gives you a glimpse into what drives a man to leave home, family and comfort of daily life to face the unknown. The book is dedicated to Fedor’s youngest son Nikolay who was three years old at the time: “My son, writing poetry for gain will rob the words of their beauty. Creating a painting for gain will steal your inspiration. In exploring the world, don’t seek profit; it will take the soul out of your traveling. Whatever you decide to do in life, you must have faith, imagination and compassion.”
This book was prompted by the Modern University of the Humanities (MUH), the main sponsor of Fedor Konyukhov’s two solo circumnavigations: the “Around Alone 1998-1999” and “Vendee Globe 2000”.
This book was prompted by the Modern University of the Humanities (MUH), the main sponsor of Fedor Konyukhov’s two solo circumnavigations: the “Around Alone 1998-1999” and “Vendee Globe 2000”. The MUH is the largest university in Russia that specializes in distant learning education across the country. Before departing on his expedition, Fedor’s boat was equipped with a laptop full of modules and electronic text books in various subjects from the history of the world to the economic and legal systems of Russia. He was instructed to complete the courses and write a journal on the challenges of studying in extreme conditions and under the pressure of deadlines. As a dutiful student Fedor went through the modules, completed the exams, wrote mini essays, kept a student journal and upon arriving home declared that distant learning is indeed possible in the most untraditional settings as long as one has a desire to learn and follow through with the curriculum. Alone with the Ocean contains the findings of the experiment that many people who use distant learning find very encouraging and inspiring.

This book is a unique collection of Fedor Konyukhov’s first expeditions that earned him the title of a world famous explorer. It’s a delightful prose written in unrefined and earnest style of a man who is at last doing what he was born to do. Each chapter is concentrated on one particular event or expedition in the life of the explorer. Readers will learn about Fedor’s solo trek to the North Pole in the Spring of 1990; his very first solo around the world sailing in 1991; his first ascent of Mt. Everest in March of 1992; a circumnavigation around the world from East to West that lasted one and a half years. Reading the book is like having a conversation with Fedor himself: switching without a warning from one event to the next, dropping peppered and witty humor directed at himself and others, reflecting on the hardships and rewards of life as an adventurer Fedor speaks with great urgency afraid that he won’t have enough time to share what he has experienced in life.

In the winter of 2000 Fedor and his wife Irina flew to Alaska where Fedor would train and then participate in the Iditarod. The book gives a detailed account of what goes into preparing for the world’s foremost dogsled race. Together, Fedor and Irina paint a picture of not only idyllic and majestic surroundings of Alaska, but also a very human portrait of the people whose livelihoods depend on this race. The main theme of the book however, is the life of a race dog. Both Irina and Fedor were completely smitten by the dogs’ personality and unconditional love that treating them as mere racing dogs became out of the question. The first part of the book gives a picture of each and every dog that Fedor chose for the race. The second part of the book is written in the form of a daily journal where the authors reflect on the beauty and hazards of the Iditarod race track; the hospitality of each city from Anchorage to Nome; and the enormous physical and emotional demands not only on a musher but on the dogs as well. The Road without Ground also contains a complete and unabridged personal journal from Fedor’s racing in the French sailing race around the world “Vendee Globe 2000”.

In the fall of 2002, a famous Russian explorer Fedor Konyukhov became the first Russian to row solo, non-stop and unassisted across the Atlantic Ocean. Leaving La Gomera and reaching Barbados in just 47 days and 4 hours made his crossing a new world record that would stand for the next decade. The price a person has to pay for being one of the best and one of the first is high and known only to the adventurer and his close family. For the rest of us the new world record is simply a short lived excitement and dry number. This book tells us the story behind Fedor’s world record and what made it possible. A Rower in the Ocean is another artistic and written collaboration between Fedor and his wife Irina.
The book contains personal diaries of Irina and Fedor Konyukhov. The first part of the book is written by Irina reflecting on what it takes to love and be loved by a man who is constantly driven to explore the world.
The book contains personal diaries of Irina and Fedor Konyukhov. The first part of the book is written by Irina reflecting on what it takes to love and be loved by a man who is constantly driven to explore the world. She’s explicitly honest in her writings about the challenges of being a wife of an explorer, mother of two and a professor at a leading university in Russia. Fedor’s diaries were written during the race in “Around Alone 1998-1999”. His writings are not only about the weather and the risks of circumnavigating the world alone on a sail boat, but mostly about why he’s chosen the life of an explorer. Fedor is frank when he shares his view of the world and his place in it. There is no reservation when he talks about the challenges of putting together an expedition. The diaries show the heart of a man in love with a woman. The end result of combining the diaries of a husband and a wife is a wonderful tribute to their love for one another and for the world that they see through each other’s eyes.
This book is about the very first Russian solo non-stop circumnavigation around the world on a sail boat. Fedor Konyukhov’s first sail boat carried an aboriginal name Karaana which means peaceful in the language of indigenous people of Australia.
This book is about the very first Russian solo non-stop circumnavigation around the world on a sail boat. Fedor Konyukhov’s first sail boat carried an aboriginal name Karaana which means peaceful in the language of indigenous people of Australia. On his first circumnavigation Fedor stayed within a narrow corridor between the “roaring forties” and “furious fifties” with only one deviation of rising up to the Equator line in the Atlantic Ocean. The book is written in the form of diaries that reflect all range of thoughts and emotions that one experiences when faced with the realization of a lifelong dream.
While participating in the race “Vendee Globe – 2000” Fedor Konyukhov created dozens of drawings for the Dao De Jing book. It was one of his long-time goals as an artist to reflect on the wisdom and philosophy of Lao-Tzu’s writings.
While participating in the race “Vendee Globe – 2000” Fedor Konyukhov created dozens of drawings for the Dao De Jing book. It was one of his long-time goals as an artist to reflect on the wisdom and philosophy of Lao-Tzu’s writings. While sailing in the ‘roaring forties’ and ‘furious fifties’ Fedor continued to create one drawing after another for each and very chapter in the Dao De Jing. One of the benefits of this expedition was that it allowed Fedor to separate himself from the busyness of everyday life in order to focus and reflect on the teachings of Dao.
