Day 124. Storm

09 April 2019

A few hours from now a new storm will hit the rowboat “AKROS”.  The storm will bring with it North-westerly winds of 40+ knots and gusts of 55 knots.  Fedor Konyukhov has been warned of the impending weather.  According to the forecast, the whole week will be stormy: for the first few days the wind will drive the boat towards Antarctica, then the wind will turn around and blow from the south, pushing the boat back north.

In these latitudes, the northerly winds are a little less dangerous as it carries warmer air with it and usually last for only a short period of time, thus not having enough time to generate large waves.  The most dangerous winds are from the west-south-west direction.  These winds come from the coast of Antarctica, accelerate along the entire length of the Southern Ocean, and consequently, bring waves of colossal dimensions with it.

Fedor Konyukhov may face very difficult weather ahead.  Mid-April is analogous to mid-October in the northern hemisphere, the daylight is shrinking, every day cold waters from Antarctica advance further north and bring drifting icebergs with them.

It is 910 nautical miles to Cape Horn.
