For the past few days Fedor Konyukhov has had to deal with a headwind. The difficulty lay in keeping the “AKROS” boat at its current coordinates and not lose the hard won miles travelled East. Fedor changed course a few times and attempted to minimise drift in the opposite direction. As a result, the boat plotted a snakelike trajectory. The difficulty was intensified by the fact that the oceanic swell was Westerly, with wind waves coming from the North-East.
Fedor characterised his state with one word – exhausted.
The headwind has changed to a tail gale. For the next 48-hours the wind will be 35+ knots, with waves forecast at 7 metres. Fedor also said that he has been experiencing freezing rain (with the winds coming from Antarctica), with possible showers of snow and hail also forecasted.
The rowboat “AKROS” is located at 49’35 degrees South, just on the border of the “Furious Fifties” latitudes, as they are called. Our rower has been in the “Roaring Forties” since the beginning.
