{"id":9424,"date":"2019-04-05T11:35:26","date_gmt":"2019-04-05T11:35:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/konyukhov.ru\/?p=9424"},"modified":"2019-04-05T11:46:49","modified_gmt":"2019-04-05T11:46:49","slug":"day-120-1-000-miles-to-cape-horn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/konyukhov.ru\/en\/day-120-1-000-miles-to-cape-horn\/","title":{"rendered":"Day 120. 1,000 miles to Cape Horn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With God&#8217;s help and St. Nicholas\u2019 prayers, I have survived aboard a rowing boat in the Southern Ocean for 120 days. \u00a0It\u2019s very cold today. \u00a0The wind turned southerly, that is blowing from Antarctica. \u00a0The boat is going to the northeast and I am currently not able to maintain the correct course. \u00a0It is snowing. \u00a0It is a full-fledged snowfall with the average wind speed of 30 knots, and the boat is all white with snow.<\/p>\n<div class=\"slider-block slider-block--margin-b\">\n            <div class=\"slider-block__inner\">\n              <div class=\"slider-block__list js-slider-block\"><div class=\"slider-block__item\">\n                    <figure>\n                     <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/konyukhov.ru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/05.04.2019-120-dnej.jpg\">\n                    <\/figure>\n                  <\/div><div class=\"slider-block__item\">\n                    <figure>\n                     <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/konyukhov.ru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/05.04.2019-wind.jpg\">\n                    <\/figure>\n                  <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<p>I cannot turn on the heating in the cabin (to make the floor warm) &#8211; it is nighttime at the moment, and it is necessary to save electricity until dawn. \u00a0Yes, and the dawn is unlikely to be very bright. \u00a0It is overcast, and the skies are very dark. \u00a0Everything is wet: my sleeping bag, clothes, there is no possibility of drying it out, and it is unlikely there will be any chance of making it dry till the end of my journey. \u00a0The current temperature is + 7 degrees, and it will get progressively colder with every day. \u00a0The remaining solar panels on the hull of the boat provide enough electricity only for most essential needs. \u00a0Only instruments and Iridium satellite phone are switched on. \u00a0The daylight hours are getting shorter, as we are in the second month of autumn and I need to go further south still, to higher latitudes, where the daylight hours will shorten even more. \u00a0This capsizing with the solar panels being ripped off was a very unfortunate event \u2026<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that I\u2019ve crossed the 1000 miles to Cape Horn line. \u00a0I see three-digit numbers on the distance graph of the onboard computer &#8220;distance to waypoint&#8221; to Cape Horn currently 998 miles, I hope I will live to see the two-digit numbers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"slider-block slider-block--margin-b\">\n            <div class=\"slider-block__inner\">\n              <div class=\"slider-block__list js-slider-block\"><div class=\"slider-block__item\">\n                    <figure>\n                     <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/konyukhov.ru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/120dnejvputi.jpg\">\n                    <\/figure>\n                  <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Today is also the 120<sup>th<\/sup> day of this expedition and according to my preliminary calculations, this was supposed to be the duration of the entire journey. \u00a0When I conceived the project and calculated the route, my calculations were based on the data of the previous ocean crossings in the Atlantic and the Pacific. \u00a0My statistics were as follows: the route in the Atlantic was 2,900 miles covered in 46 days = 63 miles per day. \u00a0In the Pacific Ocean from Chile to Australia, the route was 9,400 nautical miles, I rowed it in 160 days = 58 miles per day. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/oceanrowing.com\/Konyukhov\/Pacific2013\/dist_map.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/oceanrowing.com\/Konyukhov\/Pacific2013\/dist_map.htm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I allowed 50 miles per day in the Southern Ocean, on average.\u00a0 With the distance from New Zealand to Cape Horn of 6,000 miles, it should have been around 120 days.<\/p>\n<p>To date, I\u2019ve logged 5,200 miles (9,350 km), which means the average daily distance travelled during this expedition to date is 43 miles. \u00a0I can also see that the fastest daily passages were in the first months of the journey when the summer weather was favourable, I worked a lot on deck rowing and the boat had not yet got foul with barnacles.<\/p>\n<p>Exactly four months ago I set off from the shores of New Zealand, and it is still a thousand more miles to Cape Horn. \u00a0It does not seem much compared to the distance already travelled, but on the other hand, it is the distance from Moscow to Chelyabinsk (city east of Ural mountain range)! \u00a0The Southern Ocean did not live up to my expectations, I counted on long periods of westerly winds and a circumpolar current, with long, passing waves. \u00a0That is how I remembered and knew this Ocean. \u00a0I\u2019ve been sailing here since 1990. \u00a0And, most importantly, I saw and experienced all this when I was sailing on yachts. \u00a0Sometimes the westerly winds persisted for two weeks straight, and I did not have to tack about for half a month. \u00a0This year\u2019s weather patterns have been very different.<\/p>\n<p>I must make every effort to break through further south to about 57 degrees south for the safe passage of the island of Horn. \u00a0I am planning to travel 200 miles to the east and 1 degree to the south (60 miles) for the next few weeks. \u00a0This way I should be able to enter the Drake Strait.\u00a0 If I would not be able to reach this latitude, there is a risk of being thrown to the west coast of Chile. \u00a0It looks terrible even on a map \u2013 the entire coast is cut up by storms and winds.<\/p>\n<div class=\"slider-block slider-block--margin-b\">\n            <div class=\"slider-block__inner\">\n              <div class=\"slider-block__list js-slider-block\"><div class=\"slider-block__item\">\n                    <figure>\n                     <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/konyukhov.ru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/050419.jpg\">\n                    <\/figure>\n                  <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Regards to everyone.<\/p>\n<p>52\u201930 south<\/p>\n<p>95\u201950 west<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With God&#8217;s help and St. Nicholas\u2019 prayers, I have survived aboard a rowing boat in the Southern Ocean for 120 days. \u00a0It\u2019s very cold today. \u00a0The wind turned southerly, that is blowing from Antarctica. \u00a0The boat is going to the northeast and I am currently not able to maintain the correct course. \u00a0It is snowing.
